Rotarian A.M. Maariuppan is a socially acclaimed personality in Sankarankovil, a quaint town that nestles in the vicinity of the foothills of the Western Ghats, in the state of Tamil Nadu, Southern India.

With a career spanning over four decades, Maariuppan has been a catalytic force in the socio-economic domain of this area, being instrumental in bringing about dynamic change for the betterment of the poor and the marginalised people in and around Sankarankovil.

A glimpse at his outstanding track record:

  • In the year 1986, he formed a charitable organisation called FRIENDS’ ASSOCIATION in Vasudevanallur to help the people of Sivagiri taluk. Through his untiring efforts, he got 16 unregistered Western Ghat tribal families, west of Vasudevanallur, Sivagiri taluka, Tirunelveli district, to be issued citizenship cards by the then District Collector Mr. Bindu Madhavan, thus helping them improve their livelihood
  • In the year 1995, he joined a voluntary organisation called PUTHIYA PARVAI in Sankaran Kovil, and during the post of President and Secretary given to him, he successfully implemented free marriage assistance scheme to benefit couples living in poverty. The very same year, he also worked to conduct a Science Expo for students of the area
  • In the year 1997, he joined the Rotary Club and served the organisation in several capacities including the posts of Bulletin Editor, Secretary, and eventually as President at Level 3212 Rotary District. His immense contributions during this tenure included a Polio Awareness Rally with 5000 school children in Sankarankovil, Hepatitis B jaundice vaccination camp, setting up a permanent blood bank in the Government General Hospital, Sankarankovil
  • He went on to receive the prestigious PRESIDENTIAL CITATION award from Rotary International
  • In the year 2014, he took over as the Chairman of the Indian Red Cross Society, thus enabling several good causes such as blood donation and other similar social activities. During this tenure, he took on the responsibility of burying unclaimed/orphaned bodies of the government hospital, thus displaying abounding societal concern
  • Worked hand-in-hand with the District Collector and his team to save a toddler who fell into a well
  • During the COVID pandemic, he played a major role in the region by providing welfare and sustenance to the marginalised people, in the form of supplying them with rice, vegetables and clothing
  • With the support of the regional office of the MSME, he provided free training to countless women of the region, in sewing and embroidery, apart from providing them with free life insurance
  • Also served as a voluntary member of the Sankarankovil Paralegal Volunteer Services Committee, enabling the local visits of the District Chief Judge, District Judge, and Legal Services Committee Judge
  • Conducted legal awareness programmes every year with pro-judges, and organised an awareness camp for 300 people

  • These apart, Maariuppan served as the District Voter Awareness Council member, organising awareness marches, essay competitions, debate competitions, etc. on the importance of voting with students during the election period, also organising a voter awareness in many other schools

  • Served as a member of the Child Protection Committee, District Bonded Labor Rescue Committee, Biodiversity Management Committee, Village Search Education Committee, Branch Jail, Road Safety Committee, Government Student Hostel Selection Committee, District Labour Welfare Committee, District Nutrition Monitoring Committee, and the School Management Committee
  • Currently serving as a member of the Pudiyaparvai Seva Trust, and has been providing breakfast and evening meals to about 70 people for the past 7 years
